If you have more than 1 computer in your home or office, chances are you might benefit from linking them together and forming a local area network.
What a great thing it is, to be able to share an internet connection, files, printers, and other devices, making your digital life easier!
Many of us enjoy using a laptop to surf the internet wirelessly, while watching TV in the living room, for example.
Today’s networking products make it easy to establish connectivity for your laptop and other devices, but there are some things we should be
thinking about as we start using our networks.
Home Network Security
Most of us understand the need for a secure home in this day and age. We have locks on our front and back doors, perhaps even a security
alarm system to help ensure we are safe from intruders.
Similar thinking should be applied toward our home networks, as these are points of entry for intruders who could capture our personal information,
or use our internet connection for unlawful things (for which we would be liable!).
Is Your Network Secure?
Fortunately, there are a number of steps that can be taken to make our home networks more secure from intruders.
A few of these steps are:
1. Re-configure the access to the router’s control interface.
2. Disable SSID broadcast.
3. Properly setup WPA or WEP encryption.
4. Use MAC filtering
